Auburn Sportsground, Auburn

Eden Valley Show Grounds
Penong Caravan Park, Penong

Back to Caravan Parks Index ^

Auburn is at the southern end of the Clare Valley.

Head east from town on road signed to Saddleworth (Corner Ford Road andAuburn Road). Sports grounds are on south side of road near the sweeping bend.

On the outskirts of town within the large sports ground complex and well away from the road is a delighful tiny caravan park with only eight powered sites.  Update: Increased to 12 powered sites.  These roomy sites are all on level green grass under very shady trees. Power outlets and taps close to each site.  If needing sun for solar, you could park on adjacent old basketball courts out in the open. Telephone caretaker who will allocate a site, collect fees and provide keys to amenities. Phone the mobile phone shown on sign at entrance to Sports Ground. Caretaker on site now.

Well maintained amenities and laundry with free iron and ironing table. No disability bathroom, but shower cubicles are large and shower and toilet doors open outwards so could be used be someone with limited mobility.  Water pressure and hot water supply good, hand wash and paper towels provided. Night light outside amenities block.

* This park only just falls short of the perfect score of 10 due to lack of a disability bathroom although many people with mobility limitations could manage with little assistance. Update: There is a disability access bathroom at this lovely park but it was locked so not inspected.

$20 per night for two powered  Update: Powered $25 and unpowered $18 August 2019.

Pros: Nice lush green, pleasant and quiet location. Good amenities block, large shower cubicles with large dressing area. Toilet and shower doors open outwards (safety).  Pets permitted.

Cons: No dump point on site, with the closest being at Saddleworth twelve kilometres south east of Auburn.

Tourist information: In the wine growing region of the Clare Valley.  Auburn was the birthplace of one of Australia's great authors - CJ Dennis, best known for his play 'The Songs of the Sentimental Bloke'.

Date of stay:  November 2009 and August 2019.

One kilometre south of Eden Valley on the corner of Angaston Road and Pine Hut Road. Pleasant small park on old show grounds which is now only a sports grounds.  Need to telephone caretaker on arrival on number shown on signage at entrance. Caretaker will come to collect payment, recommend a site and provide key to showers and laundry.

Level grassy sites, some shaded by large pine trees in a rural area.  Surrounded by green paddocks (seasonal).  Close to Mount Pleasant to Angaston Road, but not much traffic during night.  Drive through and big rigs sites available.

Good clean amenities with very large shower cubicles; floor mats provided. Movement activated night lights on toilet and shower blocks. Water pressure good and adequate hot water.  Disability access toilet, and shower cubicles large enough to be used with assistance. Sink and microwave for campers in laundry. Barbecue area under cover has seating and free gas barbecues complete with cooking utensils.

Some semi-permanents grouped along roadside fence. Pets permitted on leash.

$15 per night for two powered, $10 per night for two unpowered.  Update 2019 $25 for two powered site and $16 unpowered.

Pros: Nice green grassy level sites (grass would be seasonal), pleasant environment, very good amenities, movement sensitive night lighting at amenities blocks.

In the small town of Penong (73 kilometres west of Ceduna), to the north side of the highway and on the edge of the town 500 metres away from the highway.

Flat grounds coated with sparkling white gypsum. Room for large rigs and drive though sites. Cacti planted around amenities and shrubs planted around perimeter. Shade cloth fence and shrubs as a wind break. Very quiet location.

Amenities block is a demountable which was moved and restored ten years prior to our visit, and is so well maintained it looks like new. Water pressure good (although caution in water use is asked for), hot water supply adequate.  Laundry has two coin operated washing machines and a dryer with an iron available on request.

Under cover area with gas barbecue, table and chairs and satellite television (three channels).  On site vans, cabins and house accommodation.  Pets permitted.

* This very well maintained park only just falls short of the perfect score of 10 due to lack of a disability access bathroom.

$18 per night for two unpowered, $20 for two powered. Update 2014 $28 for two powered (discounted to $23 for a single), $25 unpowered ($20 for a single).

Pros: Very clean and well maintained.

Cons:  No disability access to amenities.

Tourist Information: Longest Golf Course spans the Nullarbor see: http://www.nullarborlinks.com/. Penong, famed for its many windmills, has the Windmills Hole which is near caravan park.  Office and manager’s home is a historic building which was once a hospital.  Plaques on site tell the history. Renowned surf beach Cactus Beach is twenty three kilometres away.  For those crossing the Nullarbor, fuel at the Penong road house is no longer cheaper than at Ceduna.
