Western Australia - Low cost campsites continued

Kalannie - Petrudor Rocks, between  Pithara and Kalannie being 33 kilometres east from Pithara or twenty kilometres west from Kalannie, see our review here.  No pets

Kalgoorlie-Boulder – 24 hour rest stop for fully self contained vehicles only at junction Hannan and Patroni Streets Kalgoorlie, near the Water Corporation Treatment Works.  Lake Douglas Rest Area, Great Eastern Highway Kalgoorlie; pit toilet and picnic area; fifteen kilometres south west of the town, turn south from Great Eastern Highway 4.5 kilometres on dirt road.  Large area for camping with no time limit.        

Karratha - With the pressure on accommodation from mining company workers, finding a campsite at all can be difficult. Overnight stays behind roadhouse no longer permitted.  24 overnight stopping at Miaree Pool, thirty kilometres south of Karratha on the north east side of the Maitland River bridge is now authorised.  See also Cleaverville.  There is similarly priced small unserviced coastal camping 56 kilometres south of Karratha at the 40 Mile (Gnoorea Point). Same facilities and conditions apply as at Cleaverville.  Stays limited to 28 days in a three month period.  Check Shire website for up to date prices.  See Pannawonica for details of Main Roads 24 hour rest area at Robe River 155 kilometres south of Karratha. 

Karridale (between Margaret River and  Augusta) - Warner Glen Recreation Site, Chapman Pool On the banks of the Chapman Brook 100 metres before it enters the Blackwood River, and in the Blackwood National Park.  Access via Warner Glen Road from the Brockman Highway or Bussell Highway.  Gas barbecues, fire rings (bring your own wood, no fires permitted during summer), toilets and picnic tables are provided.  Canoe launching ramp. The access track in is narrow but accessible to caravans. Pets allowed on a leash.  DPaW fees #.  Alexandra Bridge Turn off Brockman Highway, 300 metres west of Warner Glen Road, and travel 1.6 kilometres to this large campground by the river.  Shady trees and grassy areas for tents. Flush toilets, outdoor cold showers, bins, non potable water taps, boat ramp, firewood and fireplaces are provided. $10 per person per night; children $5 and concessional Pensioner weekly rate Off Peak of $43. For further details caretaker can be contacted on 08 97582244.  Boranup Forest Set amidst the majestic Karri Forest in the Boranup National Park.  At Karridale turn west from Bussell Highway town site onto Karridale Road until Caves Road. Turn right at Caves Road and head north until you reach the Boranup Forest Drive on your left hand side. Turn into Boranup Forest Drive. Watch for signage for campgrounds. Barbecues (but no fires permitted during summer), toilets and picnic tables.  No pets allowed.  Small campground suited to small vehicles only.  DPaW fees #.  Point Road campground in the Boranup Forest is suitable for four wheel drive vehicles only, not towing. Jarrahdene Campground opened January 2018, with access for caravans, pit toilets and barbecue area, reached via Jarrahdene Road heading east from Caves Road, DPaW fees #, booking required. 

Kellerberrin – Lake Baandee Ski Club near Doodlakine, showers and toilets. Cost and access method uncertain. 

Kojonup – RV site Gordon Street, near dump pointCharge $5 per night per rig.  No amenities provided.  Toilets at nearby Visitor Centre open 9am to 5pm. Phone: 08 98310500

Kondinin – Shire Caravan Park with new amenities block in Gordon Street. Powered Site $17.00, Unpowered Site $9.50, Weekly Rate $90.00, Shower $5.00, Washing Machine $6.00, Key Deposit $10.00.

Koorda - Mollerin Rock fifty kilometres north of Koorda on the Kulja-Mollerin Rock Road; picnic and camping facilities including picnic tables and a toilet.  Newcarlbeon Tank – twenty kilometres north of Koorda on Newcarlbeon Road. Koorda Native Flora Reserve fourteen kilometres east of Koorda on the Mulji Road. Pit toilet and picnic area.  Also see Gabbin.

Kulikup – See Eulin Crossing at North Dinninup

Kulin - RV’s can park free of charge for 72 hours in the Kulin townsite (Johnston Street – South side and parking permitted between the Kulin Resource Centre and the Kulin Hostel) or for longer term parking Bush Camp - Kulin Bush Races site, Jilakin Rock North Road - Fourteen kilometres from town. Toilets and hot showers. Camping is only permitted at Jilakin Rock and at the Kulin Bush Races Track during Kulin Bush Races time.  Kulin Shire Caravan Park stay and pay what you think it is worth. Lake Grace - 24 hour parking at caravan park for self contained $5.00. 

Leeman - See Eneabba for Lake Indoon

Leinster – Small caravan park $10 now $20 per night powered sites, free use of washing machine.  Can get good value meals at Miner’s mess; bookings required. 

Leonora - Free camping area at Malcolm Dam, off the Laverton Road. Barbecue facilities only at free camping area The Terraces, Nambi Road.

Lower Chittering - Oval, $20 per night, toilets only, no power.  Book at Shire 08 95764600. 

Mandurah region – DEC camp grounds at DPaW fees #; Yalgorup National Park Mandurah 08 95829333; two camp grounds with the Martins Tank campground recently being upgraded including caravan sites.  Also in the vicinity Lane Poole Reserve Dwellingup 08 95381078; nine camp grounds.  DPaW fees # and some sites may not be suitable for caravans. 

Manjimup - Greens Island camping area is two kilometres off Donnelly Drive, 23 kilometres west of Manjimup via Graphite Road, small rigs only; toilets, no water, free.  See also D'Entrecasteaux National Park. 

Marble Bar - Des Streckfuss Rest Area on the Marble Bar - Port Hedland Road, 74 kilometres north west of Marble Bar and 129 kilometres south east of Port Hedland, toilet and picnic tables, well away from road with tracks to a large pool on Gorge Creek.  A lovely campsite.  See our review  here

Margaret River - Canebrake Pool, North of Margaret River on the upper reaches of the Margaret River in theRapids Conservation Park. Access is via Osmington Road then turn north onto Cane Brake Road.  The turn off to the site is 6.7 kilometres on the right hand side.  Wood, barbecues (but no fires permitted during summer), toilets and picnic tables are provided. Pets allowed on a leash. DPaW fees #.   Sue’s Bridge South of Margaret River in the Blackwood National Park. Head along the Brockman Highway towards Nannup. This is a large site with discreet camping areas dotted through the forest on the banks of theBlackwood River with excellent access for caravans. Wood, barbecues (but no fires permitted during summer), toilets and picnic tables are provided.  Pets allowed on a leash.  DPaW fees #.  See also Karridale and Witchcliffe.

Fitzroy Crossing - Ngumban Cliff Rest Area 98 kilometres south east of Fitzroy Crossing; not a designated official overnight stop but it has a toilet.

Gabbin - Small community free campground in the old townsite near Hall.  Unisex Toilet and shower. Heritage walk with interpretive signs. 

Geraldton - Ellendale Pool: 45 kilometres south east of the city. (Pass through small settlement of Walkaway on way to pool) $5 per person per night honesty box with a three day limit. Dogs on leads. Dump point provided. Flushing toilets and outdoor cold shower, non potable water tap, barbecue picnic area, playground, nice walking area and swimming spot.  Fig Tree Crossing: Fifteen kilometres north east of the city on Chapman Valley Road on the way to Nanson/Nabawa. $7 per person per night or $6 for Pensioners and under sixteen free, with maximum 24 hour stay. Dogs on leash.  Dump point provided. Basic amenities and covered picnic areas provided. Coronation Beach – Turn off North West Coastal Highway 28 kilometres north of Geraldton, with an eight kilometre sealed access road. Pit toilets and shower cubicles for own showers. No water or power; generators permitted. $7 per person per night or $6 for Pensioners and children under sixteen free. Dogs on leash. Fills early in peak seasons. 

Gladstone - see Carnarvon

Green Head - Billy Goat Bay, Point Louise, three kilometres north of Green Head free camp has been CLOSED to camping. Only a few hundred metres further north is the new Milligan Island Eco Tourist Camp, three day limit, pit toilets only, $20 per vehicle.  Pets permitted on leashes.   

Greenbushes (near  Bridgetown) - Free camping around the perimeter of the Sports Ground.  Toilets available.  Also a separate parking area for campers at the Greenbushes Pool. 

Grimwade – Eleven kilometres from Balingup – bush camping at site of a former mill town.  No amenities. 

Gwalia (Shire of Leonora) - Parking area for self contained only just outside the Gwalia Museum gates, no facilities,  72 hour limit.  Dump point at information bay south of Leonora.

Halls Creek – Main Roads Rest Areas; sixty kilometres north Little Panton shaded picnic area, fire place (no toilet); 100 kilometres north Leycesters 24 hour rest area with toilet, fire place, shaded picnic area; 117 kilometres south west the large Mary Pool 24 hour rest area with toilet.   

Harvey, free 48 hour parking at Snells Park on Hayward Street (off Uduc Street) at the Dump Point. Two places only and must book online Harvey Regional RV Parking

Heartlea south of Mayanup in the Boyup Brook Shire – Picnic area with toilet on the Boyup Brook-Cranbrook Road 32 kilometres from Boyup Brook at former forestry settlement site.

Highbury - Two kilometres south of Narrogin, free 72 hour parking opposite the general store, north and south of the public conveniences.

Hines Hill - There is a parking area just east of the Hines Hill townsite. Not recommended for very large rigs. This has no signage or facilities.

Hopetoun - east of Hopetoun, campgrounds atMason Bay (see our review) and Starvation Bay, pit toilets only.   $10.00 per site per night.

Jerramungup – Large rest area 34 kilometres east of Jerramungup at Jacup near the Fitzgerald River Bridge; no amenities.

Jurien - See Sandy Cape

Jurien Bay – Camping for self contained only is permitted at Wandoo Reserve, Jurien East Road for 72 hours and at Smokebush Reserve, Jurien East Road for 24 hours.  See also Sandy Cape.

Dandaragan - see Jurien and Cervantes.

Dardanup - Low cost camping is located within state forest - Wellington Mill, Collie River Valley.  Honeymoon Pool at DPaW fees #  Honeymoon Pool Note Honeymoon Pool campgrounds have no access for caravans. 

Denmark – Low Cost Camp Ground at Parry Beach $17 per site (two people) of $100 per week, cash only.  Toilets including one with disability access, showers (hot if you get in early), barbecues,and power via a generator to amenities block only.  Volunteer caretaker on site in peak periods.  Can get crowded in peak periods – no bookings. Generators permitted within specified times.  Not suited to big rigs and medium to large caravans may be excluded.  Maximum rig height 2.75 metres.  Phone 08 98408321 for questions about caravan size and accessibility.  Pets permitted.  A beach wheelchair available.

Denham – see Shark Bay

Derby – Main Roads 24 hour rest areas on Highway.  Camping along the Fitzroy River at Camballin south of the Great Northern Highway. 

Dinninup (Sixteen kilometres east of Boyup Brook) – Showgrounds.  Free.  Toilets only

Donnybrook – A small transit park complete with all amenities including laundry and dump point (contact BP servo on South West Highway for access), charges $16 for two per night unpowered.  Three night limit. (Powered site is $26).   Check with BP Roadhouse for current pricing. 

DongaraCoastal camps at Cliff Head thirty kilometres south of Dongara on the Leeman Road, Knobby Head, and Fresh Water Point, pit toilet and bins, now cost $20 per night.  Seven Mile Beach is closed.  Dongara Town Oval, Waldeck Sreet 24 hour $10 camping for self contained with dump point on site.

Dowerin – Free campground at  Minnivale twenty one kilometres from Dowerin; approximately fourteen kilometres east along the Goomalling Wyalkatchem Road from Dowerin, then north seven kilometres via the Cunderdin Minnivale to Minnivale Siding.  An alternative route is to head nine kilometres north east from Dowerin along the Dowerin Kalannie Road then nine kilometres east along the Amery Benjabbering Road which is dirt.  Flushing toilet, a dump point and hose, and a cold shower. Dwellingup – DPaW manage several campgrounds in Lane Poole Reserve and Marrinup Townsite at DPaW fees #.  Dogs on leashes and generator up to 9 pm.   Picnic facilities and toilets at most camp grounds. A new Baden Powell campground has been opened at  Lane Pool. 

Eneabba - Lake Indoon twelve kilometres west of Eneabba and 25 kilometres east of Leeman, toilets, hot showers, tank water, gas barbecues, boating on lake in season.  Lake Indoon camping is now free. 

Esperance - See also Munglinup and Condingup, also check National Parks for campgrounds includingStokes Inlet (see our review), Cape Le Grand and Cape Arid DPaW fees #.   Quagi Beach, eighty kilometres west of Esperance, toilets and non potable water $15 per night; dirt road access, can accommodate caravans.  Free Shire Campgrounds at Membinup Beach,Alexander Beach, Kennedy’s Beach and Israelite Bay are specified as four wheel drive only and may not be suitable for caravans.  See more details on Camping around Esperance.

Exmouth – See Ningaloo

Mayanup in the Boyup Brook Shire –  Jayes Bridge, large flat area by river, pit toilet.  Bush camping at Querijup Pool six kilometres along Scotts Brook Road from the Boyup Brook-Kojonup Road

Menzies - Lake Ballard, Sandstone Road, water tank, barbecue, toilets; free.  Niagara Dam, Kookynie Road, water tank, barbecue, toilets; free. 

Miling (Shire of Moora) - Miling Rest Stop at the Miling Sports Reserve, Miling East Road; this rest area includes power, toilets (including disability access) and shower facilities. Cost is $20 per night. Please see the Miling Travel Stop or on weekends contact Richard Topham 0427541020.

Mingenew – Coalseam Conservation Park DPaW fees #.  

Moora – 24 hour short stay at Roberts Street (northern end of the car park opposite IGA) for self contained only.

Mount Barker - Parking areas west side of Plantagenet District Hall, Memorial Drive, Mount Barker; free with 24 hour limit, no facilities, for self contained only.  Toilets and dump point at Visitor Centre, Old Railway Station, Albany Highway, Mount Barker.   

Muchea - Oval, $20 per night, toilets only, no power.  Book at Shire 08 95764600. 

Mukinbudin - Beringbooding Rock seventy kilometres north of Mukinbudin on Beringbooding Road, Beringbooding Rock has the largest rock water catchment tank in Australia built in 1937 and holding two and a quarter million gallons.  Recently upgraded camping area features level graveled camp sites, picnic tables, fire places and flushing toilet.  Weira Reserve thirteen kilometres east of Mukinbudin. Pit toilet and picnic area.  See also Westonia - Elachbutting Rock.

Mullewa – Well appointed Shire run caravan park $21 for two powered or $100 per week and $14 per night or $70 per week unpowered.  Drive through sites.  Book in at Yarrumba Ampol Service Stationcorner Jose and Padbury Streets.  Free camping with no amenities: Wilroy Reserve approximately fifteen kilometres left hand side of road going towards Morawa on the Mullewa Wubin Road De Grey Stock Route Picnic Area also known locally as The Waterfalls is on the Carnarvon Mullewa Road heading to Murchison Shire approximately seven kilometres left hand side of road then two kilometres in till you get to clearing and picnic spot with barbecue area.  Rest area along the Mullewa Mt Magnet Road heading to Geraldton approximately twenty kilometres rest area off the left hand side of road; can be noisy from passing trucks.  Bush camping along Mullewa Mount Magnet Road heading to Geraldton eighteen kilometres; turn right into Tenindewa/Yuna Road (bitumen road) cross railway line then turn off at Tenindewa Pioneer Wells - turn off one kilometre up Tenindewa Yuna Road  just pass the flood ways sharp right hand turn, travel along track, take care rocks protruding and puddles during winter, when you get to fork in track turn left and travel along until clearing one to two kilometres in – see Mullewa Community Resource Centre if needing better directions or any other tourism advice. 

Munglinup - 130 kilometres west of Esperance.  Rest Area opposite the Munglinup Roadhouse with flushing toilets plus showers for $5, pay at the roadhouse opposite, money goes to the local fire brigade. The shower is in a locked room in the same building as the toilets but requires a key from roadhouse on payment of the donation.  Suitable for overnight.  Campground near beach on Oldfield River Estuary; $10 per site per night (pay at nearby caravan park).   Non potable water and eco-toilets.  Salt water cold shower.
