Narrogin - Free 72 hour parking for self contained on Fairway Street in the Old Goods Shed Yard, dump point on site. Railway dam, free 72 hour parking for self contained, Mokine Road off Federal Street.  Dryandra Woodland is a national park close to Williams, Narrogin and Pingelly - Congelin campground, DPaW fees #.  See website: Dryandra Tourism.  See also Highbury.

Nanutarra - On the Nanutarra-Paraburdoo road 171 kilometres east of Nanutarra Roadhouse.  Beasley River Rest Area with pit toilet and dump point.  See our review here

Newman - Mount Robinson Rest Area 106 kilometres north west of Newman on the Great Northern Highway, and 49 kilometres south of  the Karijini National Park-Tom Price turnoff.  Pit toilet and bins, nice location well away from the highway. See our review here

Ningaloo Coast (south of Exmouth) Ningaloo Station (north of Coral Bay) share their magnificent coastline and fishing opportunities with visitors.  No facilities.  Campsites are $20 per person per week.   Day trip access fee is $5 per person per day.  Bond $100 per vehicle.  You can book ahead by calling the station on 08 99425936 or email us: lefroyningaloo@bigpond.com.  Directions: From the Great Northern Highway take the Minilya-Exmouth road for approximately 120 kilometres.  Turn left onto Ningaloo Road, approximately forty kilometres north of the Coral Bay turn off and follow the signs to the Ningaloo homestead.  The station can also be accessed from the north when Yardie Creek Mouth crossing is open.  Ningaloo Station Camping website.  Further north there are Ningaloo Coast -Cape Range National Park has camps along the coastline.  These must be booked either on line or at the Milyering Visitor Centre.  DPaW fees # and park entry fees apply.  Generators can be used in some areas: North Mandu, Kurrajong, North T Bone, Bungarra, Neds Camp (northern section only) and Osprey Bay (sites 1-4) camp sites between 8 am – 9 pm.  No fires.  Cape Range National Parks Campgrounds website. Norseman – plenty of opportunities to pull of the road for the night, in addition to places such as Bromus Dam, Dundas Rocks, Newman Rocks which are all a little way off the road with no facilities.  Please take your rubbish with you. 

North Dinninup (sixteen kilometres north east of Dinninup) – Trigwell’s Bridge is 32 kilometres from Boyup Brook on the Arthur River Road.  Camp by old bridge on a level firm parking area.  Free, no amenities.  Eulin Crossing (north of Kulikup and north east of Dinninup in the Boyup Brook Shire); access via Eulin Crossing Road or North Kulikup Road, from the Arthur River Road.  Free rest area, no amenities. 

Northampton-Kalbarri – Main Roads Rest Area at Galena Bridge, on the Murchison River thirteen kilometres north of the Kalbarri turnoff, with pit toilets and dump point.  This is one of many Mains Roads WA rest areas, and is particularly good being away from the highway and at a pleasant riverside location.  See our review here

Nungarin – At sports complex $15 powered site, $5 unpowered; book and pay at Shire, disability access shower and toilet, shaded outdoor barbecue area, outdoor kitchen, children’s playground.   Free unserviced camping at Danberrin Hill ten kilometres south of Nungarin townsite on Baird Road; Eaglestone Rock 21 kilometres north of Nungarin on Lake Brown Road; Talgomine Reserve twenty kilometres east ofNungarin Talgomine Reserve Road. Camping at National Trust property Mangowine Homestead ten kilometres north of Nungarin; powered sites $10.00 per night and $7.00 unpowered, toilets, barbecues and playground, phone caretaker on 08 90465149 for bookings.

Onslow - Free camping area available at Three Mile along the Ashburton River; no amenities.  Shire permits required in excess of three night stay

Pannawonica - On the North West Coastal Highway 46 kilometres west of Pannawonica and 155 kilometres south of Karratha, the Robe River Rest Area is a large and pleasant riverside overnighter, complete with pit toilet and dump point.   

Pemberton – Big Brook Dam Arboretum five kilometres north of Pemberton on the Karri Forest Explorer Drive to dam and further three kilometres to Arboretum campground.  DPaW fees #, toilets, dog permitted on a leash in campground.  Not recommended for caravans. . Warren National Park; Drafty’s camp and Warren Camp; not suitable for caravans, National Park entry fees and DPaW fees # apply.   See also D'Entrecasteaux National Park

D'Entrecasteaux National Park – See DPaW campgrounds website  National Park entry fees apply, DPaW fees #. These are not suitable for caravans.  Carey Brook; Boat Landing Road off Vasse Highway 25 kilometres from Pemberton; two campgrounds. Additional 4wd sand track access campgrounds include Black Point, Lake Jasper, Banksia Camp, Coodamurrup and Yeagarup.  Crystal Springs off the South Western Highway west of Walpole has easy access but tent sites only. 

Perenjori - Shire owned caravan park offer unpowered sites at $15 and unpowered tent sites at $12.  Laundry free for paying guests.  Note powered sites are not cheap at $25. 

Pinjarra – Within the townsite at 1 Fimmel Lane Pinjarra near train station (off the Pinjarra – Williams Road), free 24 hour stop for fully self contained.  Dump point nearby . Register at Pinjarra Visitor Centre Edenvale Heritage Precinct, Corner George & Henry Streets, Pinjarra (open Mon – Fri 9.30am – 4 pm, weekends 10 am – 3 pm)  Phone 0895317670 or email enquiries@murraytourism.com.auHerron Point Herron Point on the Harvey Estuary is located off the Forrest Highway approximately 25 kms south of Pinjarra and is available for camping, flush toilets, $12 fee applies; payable to caretaker on site. There is a two night limit, and campers must camp in the designated areas. 

Pithara - Petrudor Rocks, between  Pithara and Kalannie being 33 kilometres east from Pithara or twenty kilometres west from Kalannie, see our review here. No pets

Port Hedland - Racecourse, three night limit, no amenities, dump/sullage point on site, free. Entryvia McGregor Street, directly opposite the council civic centre. Pets permitted.  Only open during winter months 1st May until 31st August.

Pumphreys Bridge - Camping permitted alongside the old bridge.  Toilets at sportsgound. Free.  A quiet and pleasant location on flat grassy riverside. 

Robe River - See Pannawonica; on the North West Coastal Highway near the Pannawonica turnoff, the Robe River Rest Area is a large and pleasant riverside overnighter, complete with pit toilet and dump point. 

Salmon Gums (north of  Esperance) – Community run fully equipped caravan park in a small and friendly town $15 powered site.  

Sandstone –Lake Mason, approximately sixty kilometres north of Sandstone, a DPaW managed former station offers camping at DPaW fees # (no pets). Lake Mason.  Free camping approximately thirty kilometres east of town at Peter Denney Rest Area, bins only and not far from the road. 

Sandy Cape Jurien Bay (Shire of Dandaragan) – Beach side campground ten kilometres north of Jurien. $20 per night minimum which covers two adults and two children.  Four night maximum stay; extensions can be applied for (Shire or Caretaker). Pit toilets only, no water. Caretaker on site in peak season. Pay at honesty box at information bay when caretaker not in attendance.  No bookings. Campground fills during school holidays and long weekends. No campfires. Dogs permitted on a leash. Generators permitted to 10 pm.  Dump point and bins by information bay at entrance. 

Shark Bay – A limited number of camping sites overlooking Shark Bay at Eagle Bluff, Fowlers Camp Whalebone, Goulet Bluff.  Two wheel drive access and suitable for caravans; no facilities.  One night limit and $10 permit required; obtain from Shark Bay World Heritage Discovery and Visitor Centre, Denham or by phone 1300367072.   

Southern Cross – Karalee Rock 52 kilometres east of Southern Cross or 18 kilometres east of Yellowdine; four kilometres north from the highway is a large campground with toilets and picnic tables, near a natural rock catchment and reservoir which was built to provide water for railway transport.    See also listing for Coolgardie and Yellowdine for more options. 

Three Springs – Short stay free caravan parking at corner of Hunt Street and Hall Streets behind the swimming pool, with toilets, water and hot showers at the swimming pool amenities block.  A $10 deposit for the key if you need the amenities as they are locked at night.  A donation of this deposit is welcomed.  No power but generators are permitted within specified hours; pets permitted on a leash. Register at Shire Office or Visitor Centre.  Dump point and water in town.  Location map

Tom Price – National Parks campgrounds in the Karijini National Park, DPaW fees #.  Mains Roads 24 hour rest areas on major roads – check Main Roads website.   

Tonebridge south of Mayanup in the Boyup Brook Shire – Picnic area with toilet by bridge on the Boyup Brook-Cranbrook Road. Mullidup Pool, accessed from Tone Bridge via Terrace Road and Scotts Brook Road, north of Tone Bridge, no information on access. 

Trayning – Shire Caravan Park, $21 powered site, $82 per week, unpowered tent site $7.70, showers and laundry free (deposit for key). 

Wagin – Shire Caravan Park $18 per night for two; all amenities including laundry.  Show Grounds $5 per night for fully self contained.  Sites with access to amenities and power by arrangement with the Shire Office.  

Walkaway - See Ellendale Pool under Geraldton.

Walpole – Fernhook Falls in the Mount Frankland National Park; tent sites only, DPaW fees #; park entry free. 

Wandering - Caravan Park with toilets, showers, power and laundry facilities $22 per night per caravan/tent with up to four family members. or $120 per week.  See also Pumphreys Bridge.

Wannamal - Robert Hindmarsh Rest Area Bindoon-Moora Road, Wannamal.  Five sites, free electric barbecue, public toilets, donation box. Pets permitted. Contact Wannamal Community Centre on 08 96557024.

Watheroo - Next to the Watheroo Station tavern, rest area has power, toilets and shower facilities. $15 per night. Contact The Watheroo Station Tavern on 08 96517007.

See current camping fees at Western Australian national Parks and State Forest camp grounds at DPaW camping fees.  Camping fees for sites administered by DPaW (formerly DEC) have recently risen; check website to keep up to date with fees #.  In most cases, those with showers charge $10 per person per night and those without showers with amentites varying from none to a pit toilet and picnic area charge $7.50 per person per night and concession card discounts apply.  Camping fees are payable in addition to Park entry fees where applicable.

Western Australia - Low cost campsites continued

A lovely camping area at Karalee Rock, where water was collected off the rock to provide for steam trains on the Perth to Kalgoorlie line. 

Westonia – Westonia:Westonia Caravan Park powered sites cost $15 per night and unpowered sites cost $11 per night ($80 weekly rate),new amenities and camp kitchen 2016.   Westonia Recreation Complex, Cement Street, Westonia $5 per night unpowered or $10 per night with power, hot showers available – pay at Shire office.  Free at  Elachbutting Rock 100 kilometres north of the Westonia townsite on Elachbutting Road, picnic tables, fire pits, pit toilet and a roomy camping area. 

Whim Creek (between Roebourne andPort Hedland) - Whim Creek Hotel which was closed in 2011 re-opened 15th April 2015 under new ownership of two Aboriginal Corporations, with 'free' (customer) camping, with access to showers and toilets.   City of Karratha do not permit camping at Balla Balla.

Williams -Dryandra is a woodland very close to Williams and Narrogin.  Congelin campground, DPaW fees # apply.  See website: Dryandra Tourism 

Witchcliffe -Conto Campground in the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park between Margaret River and Karridale.  Campgrounds are approximately 1.5 kilometres from the coastline.  Travel along Bussell Highway south from Witchcliffe townsite. Turn west onto Forest Grove Road, then turn left at Caves Road and travel south past the Mammoth Cave. Turn right into Conto Road at the Lake Cave Visitor Centre and travel west. Camping area is signed. Facilities provided include pit toilets, may have wood or gas barbecues depending on which campground (but no fires permitted during summer) and picnic tables. Bring own firewood.  Fires not permitted in some campgrounds.  No pets allowed.  Some sites are small with many suited to tents only with some suitable for caravans.  See details of the five  Conto campgrounds here.  DPaW fees # and bookings apply, but park pass or entry fee not needed.

Yarloop, free 48 hour parking at Recreation Grounds on Teesdale Street with an entry point off Kendall Street. Three places only and must book onlineHarvey Regional RV Parking

Yellowdine - Karalee Rock 52 kilometres east of Southern Cross or eighteen kilometres east of Yellowdine; four kilometres north from the highway is a large free campground with toilets and picnic tables, near a natural rock catchment and reservoir which was built to provide water for railway transport.  Interesting walks in this pleasant location.   See also entries for Southern Cross and Coolgardie.    

Yerecoin - Wayside Rest Area, toilets, showers, $15 per night, maximum 3 nights.  Payment to be left in an envelope to Yerecoin Progress Association at Yerecoin Traders.  Phone 0400999593.

York -  Avon Park, which was a small area with free powered site was closed down 1 November 2019.  24 hour parking for self contained, as there are no amenities or power, is located on the opposite side of the Avon River from Avon Park at Janet Millet LaneGwambygine Park on the Avon River, free 24 hour camping eleven kilometres south on the Great Southern Highway between York and Beverley, toilets, barbecues and non potable water. Room for around 45 rigs.
