The second stop is a further two kilometres towards Oodnadatta, with a short drive in to a lookout to Mount Batterbee.  By this time the midday sun was ideal for viewing this mount and the other hills in all directions from this vantage point.

Arckaringa Station Campground is a very roomy area, but all unpowered and no water supplied.  No phone reception.

Amenities are tin shed style, with hooks for clothes made from horseshoes.  Unisex amenities with two toilets and two showers only, all using bore water which was slightly brackish.  Instantaneous gas hot water.

An undercover area has a barbecue and seating. Communal fire pit.  Sink was outdoors with a view to the Mirackina Range to the west, signed “sunset view”.  Rubbish drums which were burnt daily, with separate drums provided for recyclable cans and bottles.  Campfires permitted but provide your own wood.  Pets allowed with usual conditions. Campsites $20 per night, cash only.

There are also donga style basic cabins for those not equipped for camping, guests to use the communal amenities block.  Rates from $50 (single) to $90 (triple).

Photo above from the campground to the Painted Desert has been taken with camera on zoom.

The Mirackina Range to the west of the Painted Desert is part of the same range system as the Arckaringa Hills which contain the Painted Desert.

We see more of the Mirackina Hills on the following page.
