There are a number of private companies offering roadside assistance services, but most have limited benefits compared to above.  These include National Roadservice Australia, Allianz Global Assistance, Budget Direct Roadside Assistance, and Real Roadside.

Club 4x4 has insurance and a roadside assist add-on more suited to off the beaten track routes, and options for higher limits.

Some comprehensive insures such as Suncorp Insurance also offer a Roadside Assist add-on to comprehensive insurance.

AAMI also have a roadside assistance product available as an add on to their comprehensive car insurance.  Towing cover when the breakdown cannot be resolved roadside is limited to towing your car to the closest repairer at no extra charge, up to 20 kilometres in the metro area and up to 100 kilometres for regional areas. This includes any caravan or trailer up to 2.75 tonnes.

Ken Tame Insurance, available to members of CMCA (Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia) includes an option to take out a roadside assist add-on, with a good range of benefits.  This has been discontinued.

Check with your insurer, then if they have roadside assist cover, compare value and cover to the motoring organisations. If your vehicle is used partly for business, different premiums or eligibility may apply with some of the insurance companies.

Some makes of vehicles have roadside assist for a limited time if purchased new.  As an example, Ford have cover with the limits as shown here.

Membership of the motoring organisation in the state where your principal home is will give you coverage Australia wide through reciprocal arrangements.   They may also cover you if you have membership of an overseas motoring organisation.  Phone 131111 Australia wide for breakdown assistance.  If you are using a phone on an international network, you need to use the international +61 when dialling roadside assist.

If you have a higher level of cover specific to your state, to access this you may be required to telephone a separate number to access roadside assistance and these are shown hereunder.

For those with hearing impairment, most states have an SMS option, and can be used for members of that state as listed.  See options state by state for those with hearing impairment hereunder.  Check with your state as to whether you should SMS the state of your membership or the state where you are requiring the assistance as advice varies.

In most cases, you are required to reside in the state of the organisation, and benefits may be calculated according to distance from "home" eg if accommodation is required if too far from home. While most state organisations will accept a postal address or an address of a relative being used whist travelling, RAA specify a physical address.
